If they start maintaining accounts for members (with the proceeds from their clicks along with their membership fees) they might make enough to pay their bills just by keeping the interest on those balances. They can also do things like collect rounding errors. (If I clap for 3 stories, instead of paying them $1.6666666 each, they pay them $1.66 each and keep the $0.02 rounding error for themselves.) Those kind of things can add up surprisingly quickly.
