This was very insightful. I too am from the south, Atlanta, and have a great career opportunity in Seattle. Well actually in Tacoma so what you are saying may be magnified. I was attempting to look up the outlook others have on the city or the Northwest and came across this wonderful piece. I am not really a reader, I write for myself, but this had me locked in to every word of your other stories. I think I’ve fallen in love with you.

But seriously, being from the south I am used to the open racism and it no longer bothers me anymore. I love being black too and sometimes feel everyone has wanted to be the same at one time or another. Furthermore, feel everyone should gain the experience of how it feels to walk in my shoes down here.

I do not mind being around white people or any other race but what I gathered from this is to be prepared for sort of a culture shock. If someone were not to like you based on something you did not chose to be, it’s definitely more open than it may be up there. Even as an educated black man, I am used to being around my own people and hope I don’t lose sense of who I am and where I came from.

Thank You
