A Look into Ford’s Self-Driving Future

by Ken Washington, Vice President of Research and Advanced Engineering, Ford Motor Company

Ford’s plan to develop self-driving vehicles isn’t just about freeing up time otherwise spent driving. It’s about making life better.

For us, that ideally means a future where traffic congestion is drastically reduced and people who’ve lost the ability to drive themselves, like those with disabilities, regain the freedom to get around.

Our new 90-second ad for the Super Bowl highlights our near- and long-term mobility solutions — including self-driving vehicles. This may raise questions for people who are being exposed to the idea of self-driving vehicles for the first time.

So, we thought we would share an interview that provides Ford’s perspective on a self-driving future. In December, I had the pleasure of speaking to Val Zavala, host of KCET’s Town Hall Los Angeles, about the future of fully autonomous or self-driving cars. Our wide-ranging conversation covers how fully autonomous cars hold the potential to make roads safer, how they work, the need for industry and government collaboration to establish appropriate regulations and more.

I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.
