Chapter 29 | Years with Astrid: A Novella by Lucy Monday

The next morning, Elisse found Noah in the kitchen. He didn’t look drunk or hungover. The first thing he said to her was, “I won’t be going to the birthday party.” A sorry would’ve been better, but Elisse realized that in their previous arguments, this was his own way of accepting defeat. If he thought she was wrong, he would shut her off, but if he thought he was the one at fault, he would move on, opening up a new subject.

At this point, Elisse decided it was better to keep up with this new subject instead of going back to the argument, forcing an apology from him.

“It’s your son,” Elisse said, still not used to the thought that Noah has a son. Noah had been with another woman, has a son with her. She barely slept because of all the thoughts in her head. If Noah had stayed last night, he would’ve spent the entire night listening to all her rants.

At some point last night, she thought of competing, of having a kid with Noah, maybe multiple kids, because after all, she is the wife. She should be better. She should be the one having his kids. But she found it absurd this morning, having kids just for the sake of competition. Yes, she had thought about having kids before, but she was never really aggressive about it. It wouldn’t be right to suddenly become eager to have kids, all because she wanted to outscore Astrid.

Noah said he still wasn’t yet ready to meet the kid. Showing up at that birthday party might overwhelm the kid. It would be enough for his mother and sister to show up, a very short introduction. Then they would set up a time so they could be properly introduced.

Elisse agreed, with her heart pounding, she said it was a good idea.
