And…you know that these ‘movie makers’ would absolutely and honestly, acknowledge that ‘seeing’ a black man as President painted a whole new picture of what is possible. First being respect. Second being ‘normal’. I have two grandchildren who will not remember a time when an African-American wasn’t just another President — normal. (They also know that having Trump as Prez = NOT normal.)
I always think: if you’re a ‘white’ person making movies, etc, and it’s about ‘people of color’ — don’t - just don’t. Just assume you will get it wrong, because unless you’re Ken Burns, you just will. There is no shame in not being able to tell someone else’s story. Call up someone who *knows* what they are doing and say: “I have a ton of money to make a movie — I’d like it to tell the story of some important or cool thing about black people in Montana (or, or, or) — come on over and make one.” I am stunned every day that people still don’t get this. I’m a Pacific Coast tribal member. Even nice white people (and I rarely ever meet another kind), who would like ‘peace and harmony’, will ‘help’ this goal by saying: “The problem Indians have is…” I respond by saying: “Thanks. I’ll send them an email — problem solved.” We laugh…maybe ‘they’ learn…
