I agree with you but what is the solution? You mentioned nationalizing newspapers and that might not be a terrible idea (works for NPR, BBC) if the other option is to sell the paper off to the next Silicon Valley superstar or billionaire curmudgeon.
But that is for the newspaper companies and Congress to decide. We at least get to vote for Congress. In the meantime, we can ‘vote with our wallets’ by ignoring the content curators and seeking out primary news sources. It may be a simplistic solution but it’s the most we can do as individuals at this point in time, where we can’t afford lobbyists to defend our cause.
And it works. Remember Myspace? That was supposed to take over the world too. People checked out and it died a quick and painless death. No reason why this can’t happen to the clickbaiters.
