Waiting At The Red Light
Ever sip on your hot coffee, or tea like me, and ponder questions such as, what will the weather be like this afternoon? Or, how long will it take for this red light to change to green? Well, the answer will come to you in time. It is comforting to know that the weather will always come, and the light will always turn green.
Same can be true of your goals, dreams, and wishes. Folks frequently will use the words interchangeably, but let’s be honest, they are not the same. The wish-upon-a-star concept unfortunately does not have the same effect on the banker who orchestrated your small business loan as it does in Disney movies. Dreams are fantastic as they can be aspirations of where you could go, what you could do, and who you could be. But when?
Goals, well, there’s just something about a goal. Goals are to be celebrated (think Bobby Orr). Goals make people stand up and notice. Goals are substantive by nature. There are actions which lead to the accomplishment of a goal. Things must happen for a goal to come to fruition. Goals can change outcomes.
Perhaps we like to skip to the end too often and just watch the highlight reels of exciting goals. We know, though, there’s so much more! There must be a beginning, middle, and most certainly an end. While a team is coming together to start pre-season practice, individual members have a goal of making the team, or being a starter, or the top in some statistic. The best teams, the championship winning teams, set team goals, too. Goals for the drills in practices, the games, the season, the post-season — you get the idea.
Taking the time to define the goal @FosterYourGrowth, either as an individual or as a member of a team, lays the foundation for the rest of the season. Can you skip practice all season and be the champion? So, then next time you take a sip at a red light, think about this question: What goal can I set with a beginning, middle, and an end? Think…think…green light — GO!
