Creativity is an ongoing process grounded in an innate curiosity about life and the world at large that requires a nimble, open mind regardless of whether you’re a convergent or a divergent thinker. It’s about conceiving and owning ideas from their inception through to their final execution. The most creative minds are driven to do this by an intense passion that comes to them as naturally as breathing. Creativity is not something you can use up: the more ideas you generate, the more you have. Creativity is not antithetical to either productivity or accountability. In fact, having constraints, whether they’re timelines, budgets, or deliverables, actually forces you to become more creative in the way you solve problems. The key is to be able to balance freedom with discipline. There’s a tension between the two that can act as a catalyst to inspire you to come up with some of the best work you’ll ever do. The more focus you can apply to the work in front of you, the faster it will get done.
