If you’re around my age of 26, 27, or 28-years-old, we have seen a lot of content creators have their “moment in the sun” before fading away. To the younger and older readers right now, my generation grew up during the beginning stages of social media and YouTube, so if we had to build a Hall of Fame for those we watched, please believe we could lol. But with that said, how many of them stuck around and improved over time?

One of the very few people who successfully achieved longevity and more exceptional work is Cameron Miller and his Dormtainment teammates. Over this past decade, Dormtainment has been a founding father in the new ages of comedy, music, and social media for a generation of creators who grew up watching them online. I can say this because I’m also one of those people lol.

“Honestly, it’s not a shock to me,” Miller said. “I remember at the very beginning in ’09 when speaking to the guys about our group and I asked, are y’all willing to go ten years? At the time, I had read various stories from those who made it in Hollywood, and they all said it took at least ten years to make it. And despite me asking that question, nobody left the room (laughs).”

Throughout the years, we’ve seen Dormtaiment do a multitude of things that were new to creators at the start of the last decade. As a group of college-aged and educated black men from all over the country, they managed to tell their own stories and be different, while also being a great teammate to one another. Before “linking up” was a thing, Dormtaiment were amongst the first people, I saw collab with other creators frequently.

Yet on a lesser note, even though it’s crucial, there was evident growth within everyone’s responsibilities, including Miller’s.

Although the Florida native is well known for his wittiness and punch lines during DT’s skits and songs, Miller was also editing, producing, and directing parts of their work. But how does that transformation naturally occur?

“By studying!” Miller said. “When you know this is something you want to do, you must study and challenge yourself to be better, and it helps to be in an environment where everybody wants to improve and be the best they can be. Over time, we studied the greats while also working on ourselves. It’s just up to us to do the best we can do so that we can have a full and real legacy.”

I’ve been lucky to interview a lot of people in my journalism career, with a portion being well-known in what they do. But Cameron Miller is one of the most genuine people I ever spoke with before. Hearing him say what he said about his journey and DT’s once again reconfirmed why I remained a big fan of their’s for the last ten years.

For any content creator on their journey to success, one must have patience and a strong belief in themselves. Point, blank, period! And while Miller and Dormtainment have reached levels of fame, notoriety, and tenure in a game that’s unforgiving for all of us, they haven’t forgotten what matters most: The ability to grow.

“Apart from growing is knowing what could be lost (fans, momentum, etc.). Regardless of that, you have to do what’s best and matters for you because everything else comes and goes, especially in the beginning.”
