Ariel Schrag, a critically-acclaimed memoirist and screenwriter, takes us on a painfully funny tour of her formative years, from her childhood in Berkeley to her mid-twenties in Brooklyn, exploring what it means to connect to others when you don’t yet know who you are — when you want to be “part of it” but the “it” changes daily. We meet hippie babysitters, mean girls, best friends, former friends, prom dates, girlfriends, sex ed students, and far too many LensCrafters sales associates.

These frank, irreverent, and honest comics revel in the uncomfortable — occasionally cringe-inducing — moments from our early years that

Title: Cringful Self-Therapy, IMO
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019
Review: I’ve noticed a trend over the last few years where memoirs are being published (graphic or text) that are more like a diary or self-therapy than an actual memoir. There isn’t much in the way of perspective in them — just one story after another. Many of them traumatic. Good for the authors working through their issues, but these works tend to make bad novels/graphic novels. This is exactly like that.

The stories were clearly important for the author, whom I am unfamiliar with, but they don’t make sense for the reader, IMO. You had a babysitter who went commando while taking very poor care of you? So? You played incredibly inappropriate “games” with other children? Um. You did some terrible things while in school? Most of us did, so: [shrug]. You struggle with your identity? … Yep, this is self-therapy.

I expect more from a book. I expect the stories to go together in some way that makes sense to the reader. I expect movement. If a story from the author’s childhood illustrates a point in an overarching narrative these stories could be applicable. But by themselves I was bored a lot and cringing even more. Some stories should be kept to you, your closest friends, and your shrink, in my opinion.

I didn’t enjoy the book. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Title: Lacking direction or connection to a large audience
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2018
Review: I really enjoy memoirs and while I was not familiar with this author I thought I would give this book a try since I do enjoy graphic novels. I should also say I hate to review a book without finishing it but I just could not finish this book! I tried so many times and got well over half way but with each story I just couldn’t figure out what the point was; it all just seemed so superficial. I keep waiting for each vignette to get to the point and there often wasn’t one.

This also came off as very inside baseball since it is clear these stories mean something to the author however the connection isn’t there for the reader. I have noticed a trend of younger authors producing memoirs yet they often don’t have enough perspective to offer enough substance for a full book, graphic or otherwise. Its also possible I am not the correct audience for this book but I was left wondering while reading it who would be the correct person to like this book other than the author and her close friends in the stories.

Title: Absolutely love this
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2019
Review: Whether you like this book will kind of depend on whether or not you want something that has a clear linear narrative. Rather than follow a more traditional timeline, this book jumps around a little as we see little snapshots of the author’s life. It very much reminds me of Julia Wertz’s Fart Party comic strip in this way.

I think what endeared this book to me was how Schrag approached her homosexuality. It’s fairly common for people to write books that lean more towards a dramatic coming of age tale of self-acceptance, but that’s not what she did here. I wouldn’t have minded a book like that from her, but what Schrag does here is treat her sexuality as something that’s brought up in passing along with other facets of her being. It’s kind of refreshing that she approaches it in this way since it’s not being made the central thing about herself, as can sometimes be the case with some books. It’s very much “I’m gay, up to speed now? Good, now let’s move on.”, which is nice since it emphasizes that being gay is both normal and healthy — and should be treated as such, as should sexuality and the human body in general. Without going into detail, this is something that is touched on somewhat later in the book, but without it being one of those Central, Major and Important Messages moments.

I do occasionally get the impression that I would have understood a bit more of things if I’d read her other works, but it never comes across as required reading to enjoy this work. It instead just makes me curious to read more about Schrag via her work. Ultimately I just really love this book — it may not be for everyone but it’s definitely something that is right for me.

Title: The Constant Struggle to Fit In Even with Yourself
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018
Review: Took me only two days to read and explore this book of black and white comics from Ariel Schrag. The 14 “chapters” highlight events and relationships from 1986 to 2006, a 20 year period in author and artist Ariel Schrag’s life. Highlights are the proper term because sometimes the stories are self-contained, they feel completed and I felt satisfied if not always happy after reading them. Other “chapters” left more questions and felt too short, too open-ended, leaving me feeling frustrated. That reflects life, right? We don’t always get the answers or have a sense of an ending but as a reader it wasn’t a pleasant feeling.

13 of the 14 “chapters” seem to show a consistent artistic style though details are more spare in many of the pieces discussing younger ages compared to the teen and adult events. One except is “The Truth” with a very different style that was created during Schrag’s junior high school year. I do find her current work easier to read and look at but that’s a matter of taste not an artistic critique. Every now and again, the style changes a bit, darker backgrounds or less/more detailed backgrounds for instance but that is rare.

Because people can be worried about such matters, yes, this book deals with sex and violence (physical and emotional) at times but that is not the main topic of the comics. Fitting in and figuring out who you are and how to be you is the subject and in that sense, regardless of other differences of race, sex, gender, religion, wealth, or sexual orientation, it should be relatable to most of us.
