I’ve used http://up-for-grabs.net to help many new people start, giving tips and advice and making sure that the issues stayed small and well documented how to do it. It’s a lot of work (more than solving it myself), but I see many people beginning on Open Source struggle to begin, similar to this post.

I don’t know the developer perspective though, but give it a try? Of course are also welcome in my own Umbrella JS, where there are a couple of Up For Grabs issues opened right now (:
