Very well put. I just want to note that evolution knows no right or wrong. It doesn’t care. So if that religious community survives because of their rituals and beliefs (or despite of them), it doesn’t really imply these behaviors are “the best” for the individuals. They are what makes the whole set survive, community of individuals, their beliefs and behaviors. The point of course still stands that the individuals might believe one thing (like shunning bacon so that they can go to heaven), but are really doing another thing (like strengthening their community bonds which in turn benefits them as they get support from said community).
