4 Things You Can Do To Improve Your SEO Right Now

For the novice, SEO can seem like a challenging task to face head-on. If you’re trying to improve your website’s rankings, but don’t think you have enough experience to beat out your competitors — don’t worry. There are several things a beginner can do to improve their organic search performance.

Ready to learn more? Here are four things you can do to improve your website SEO strategy right now!

1) Using WordPress? Download Yoast’s SEO Plugin

If you’re operating on a WordPress platform, download the Yoast SEO plugin right away and upload it onto the back end of your site. This instantly puts editable fields into each one of your web pages so you can add things like title tags, meta descriptions and keywords. Go through your web pages and fill out the sections to implement your basic on-page SEO elements.

2) Refresh Your Keyword Research

Any business has a natural set of keywords that will relate to its products and services — try to work those into your website copy at appropriate times. Use a combination of Google search, competitive analysis and Google’s Keyword Planner to find broad match keyword variations and exact match variations. Try to use 3–5 variations per 800 words. Go back through your older web pages and refresh them with new keywords sprinkled throughout the header tags, body copy, meta description and image ALT text.

3) Create Better Brand Content

Unique content is key to operating a highly ranked website. Posting a lot of content will help you rank higher, but only if it shows quality. Although many think it’s the other way around, your main goal with SEO is to write for humans — not search engines. Sure, technical SEO will assist search engine bots in crawling your site, however, it’s humans who are going to read, share, comment and link back. And content marketing is what really gives your website a competitive edge.

Need some content ideas? Give one of the following a try:

  • Blog posts
  • Whitepapers
  • Ebooks
  • Landing pages
  • Press releases
  • Explainer videos
  • Infographics
  • PDF download
  • Guest articles

4) Add Image ALT and Title Attributes

The image ALT attribute gives an accurate written description of the image depicted. ALT text was designed to help blind people “see” what’s on the screen in front of them. This is a good area to add more keywords, but beware of over-stuffing. Keep the ALT attribute simple and true to what’s represented in the picture. The image title attribute is also important, since search engines read them when they crawl a page. Give your files relevant names and descriptive ALT text, and you’ll see your rankings rise.

In WordPress, this is easy. Navigate to the media section and click on an image. You’ll see the fields where you can edit the ALT and title tags in the section to the right.

Best of Luck!

If you’re new to the world of SEO, try implementing some of the above strategies to see a boost in your analytics overnight. Best of luck with your SEO marketing!
