It’ll take a lot more than one mass democratic exercise in trying to fire the PC Police, to cure the mass epidemic of mental illness that political correctness itself is. Even conservatives, and in many ways especially so, have been infected with PC all their lives and by multiple vectors: public education, university curriculum and campus culture, advertising, etc.
Even the most right-wing among them would probably look at an episode of “Home Improvement”, for instance, and just find it “wholesome.” They would not have the skills nor the insights to recognize a kind of penetrative propaganda that reduces manhood and fatherhood to a simian caricature, and working-class skill sets to a joke on themselves to the extent that a man who makes a living doing a TV show about how to fix up the house, can barely hold a hammer.
And that is only one example, and a rather dated one, of how images of male ineptitude and blue-collar charlatanry and obsolescence have been made into everyday norms embedded in the world views of the masses. And they have little to do with party affiliations or voter preferences. Political correctness is a man in unfamiliar territory hesitating to hold a door for a lady like he was raised to do. It is a person of not-enough color holding back in a staff conference when his darker-skinned colleague is promoting something preposterous which will harm the operation for everyone. It is a police officer wondering whether to have his holster unsnapped going into a live crime scene will cost him his career because of the skin tone of the perps inside.
Et cetera. The vicious persistence of political correctness that we are still seeing so-called “conservative” lawmakers fully infected with, is not anything being enforced on them. They enforce it on themselves and have been for a lifetime.
The cure for PC will take a commitment to conduct and manners and decision-making made in open defiance of how the PC code might lead others to react to it. This goes a long way in explaining why fanatics like alt-righters and white-nationalists can attract such followings: by giving the appearance of defying PC in others’ behalf at a distance, they also enable themselves to craft and begin to enforce a new form of PC that serves their own interests better. It is no “excuse” for right-wing fanaticism, to relax and blame PC fanaticism across an entire everyday civilization, for creating it.
But if, one at a time, we do not learn to obey our own codes of conduct rather than whose-ever code of political correctness is currently in vogue, the talking-points behind any of them won’t really make much difference. To be a slave, is to be a slave, and it primarily takes the slaves themselves agreeing to the terms of their enslavement by refusing to defy them.
And PC self-policing, is merely a condition of self-enforcing enslavement, so successful that its overseers are just a token display.
