Much the same cognitive dissonance might attend the iron-spined Republican farm and ranch ladies of 1870s Wyoming and Nebraska assuming the rostrum at Berserkeley, or the dowdy, severe, moralizing, Bible-thumping, rolling-pin hausfraus of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union making their way forward to speak at Harvard.
