Though my own Appalachian roots can only be found five or six generations back, and among the more recent ones the term “hillbilly” might not set so well, I still got it full well, when Preacher Danny, fourteen years old, said to the Wobbly agitator in the masterpiece film “Matewan”, who’d come to town to try and “help” during the Tug Fork coal wars:

“Mister, I reckon folks around here’s had ‘bout all the help we can STAND.”
