How did you become a developer?

Olivier:

During hig school we spent some time programming small games on our calculator with a friend. Then he suggested me to follow a Computer Science Bachelor with him and here I am today :)

Benjamin:

Just after high school I enrolled into a Computer Science Bachelor and taught myself web development.

Benjamin De Bernardi

What are the most interesting and influential topics that you have spoken about?

Olivier:

I gave a few talks about RabbitMQ and a PHP library a made to consume queues, swarrot. Even if more & more people are using RabbitMQ, I think this software (and brokers in general) are not well known enough.

Benjamin:

I recently gave a talk about Feature Flags, and for me it’s the most interesting talk I gave. Many people don’t know how to toggle feature or rollout without doing a deploy and showing how we are doing it at BlaBlaCar was really cool.

What will you talk about at the PHP Frameworks Day 2016 conference?Olivier:

With Benjamin we will talk about Symfony 2 and what we are doing with it at BlaBlaCar.

Benjamin:

With Olivier we will talk about Symfony 2 and what we are doing with it at BlaBlaCar :)

Could you recommend any websites or books how to become a PHP guru?

Olivier:

I follow a lot of personal blogs. IMO it’s a good way to discover a lot of various tips!
Of course, going to conference is a very good way to learn a lot.

Benjamin:

Even if my opinion is biased because I love Symfony 2, I’d advise anyone to read the Symfony 2 documentation and best practices which are pretty generic and can be used everywhere also they should read the PSR specifications.

What do you think about the future of programming in 10 years?

Olivier:

No idea! Who knows, maybe machines will start to replace developers? :)

Benjamin:

I have absolutely no idea. Given the evolution speed of programming I really can not have a clear vision of what it could be in 10 years.

BlaBlaCar Team

Please, tell a funny story from your life or the anecdote.

Olivier:

I am probably the BlaBlaCar tech guy who broke the website in production the most! :o

Benjamin:

A funny anecdote: I’m almost always wearing bermudas shorts even in winter and when it’s raining.

What is your best achievement ever?

Olivier:

The “new” Blablacar website version. Today there is almost 80 people working on it but when we started it almost 5 years ago we were only 3 and it was an incredible step when we released it for the first time.

Benjamin:

My biggest achievement in my professional life is the new pricing engine I am building at BlaBlaCar, it allowed us to get back to the competition quickly.
