A good design portfolio should tell a story

Who doesn’t love a good story?

A good story captivates, holds attention, and leaves people wanting more. As I revamp my portfolio, I aim to balance my passion for writing with engaging visuals, knowing most people appreciate aesthetics. A good portfolio should tell a story about your work — from the highs, lows, moments of growth, etc. I like to ask myself “What did I learn about this experience?”

I try to showcase my problem-solving skills, successes, failures, obstacles and how I overcame them, and finally the finished product. Nothing is ever perfect, so I feel like showcasing the aforementioned is almost like a metaphor for life, sometimes we fail or succeed, but it’s about growing and learning from the process. Your growth and journey are uniquely your own!

Here are a few principles that I like to stick to:

Show them what you’re made of!

During a portfolio revamp, or just creating a brand-new portfolio from scratch, I like to include at least 3–5 case studies of what I consider my best work. This usually includes writing about my expertise, skills, and my unique approach to problem-solving and how these assets can be an asset to their problem.
