Main battle tanks are the core of a modern army. But we have to consider that we’re in a context were states prefer fighting proxy wars and low intesity conflict, rather than full scale confrontations between militaries. So, why spending money on a battle tank that will se no actions for the next decade? I’ll leave this question open adding one more point: Navies, Naval Infantries and long range Air Forces should be the main pillar of contemporary militaries. This implies ships (of course), manned aircraft (fixed wing, rotary or hybrids), drones, airborne troops and very few main battle tanks.
