There is another aspect worth examining here: Feeling of self-worth.
Excuse the stereotyping, but it helps to stay brief: Is there really a difference between a middle-aged man who goes to extremes to stay strong and fit, and a young woman who goes to extremes to stay thin and close to mainstream beauty ideal?
Both are missing the same thing: the feeling of intrinsic self-worth, regardless of their looks or strength. It’s hard to be happy if you need to constantly exceed certain benchmarks to consider yourself worth something.
