What Are The Benefits Of Having A Pure Heart?

--

Nowadays people are concerned about ‘living their dream life’ and ‘doing what feels good’. Social media is filled with different ways through which people can achieve this. Amidst this, purity has become a less discussed topic. It has become a very old-fashioned concept that the mere mention of it can cause many to turn away. Before we explore why purity is important for spiritual growth, it is important to understand what it truly means. Purity means being free from contamination. Biblically, it describes a person’s overall aspects. It is used to refer to the character and conduct of a person when he is not surrounded by anyone. Or to put it another way, when it is just him and God.

Now, why is it important to have a pure heart?

1. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8)

One of the most important benefits of having a pure heart is that it provides us an easy access to God’s presence. Seeing God refers to developing a deep connection with Him. When we are pure, there is nothing that can ruin our bond with Him. And we become pure by letting go of all the things the world fed us. We become clear in the spiritual realm, allowing us to experience His presence more fully. An impure heart filled with envy, and greed, is never a place where Jesus would be pleased to dwell. When we let go of them, we become what God intended us to be. It’s like cleaning a window; only when it’s clear can we see clearly.

2. “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”(1 Samuel 16:7)

The world tells us to take care of our bodies. But the Bible says that God is not bothered by our looks. Whether we are tall or fat, short or lean, God only judges us through our hearts. Judgment of the heart is not possible for man because he is completely unaware of what goes in and out of his heart, let alone his companion’s. When a man labels a person as good or bad taking into account his looks, God does it by scrutinizing his heart. This is important because God chooses the ones with pure hearts. And the ones chosen will have nothing to fear. When chosen by God, negativity and negative influences no longer hold power over our lives.

3. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. “ (Matthew 15:18–20)

“Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”(1 Timothy 4:12)

There are many verses in the Scriptures that tell us how much an evil heart can cause. In Matthew, Jesus speaks about how it isn’t what goes inside a man, but what comes out of him that defines him. So, as Christians, we are expected to be mindful of what comes out of our mouth. All kinds of adultery and evil thoughts rise from the heart. But a clean heart will pose examples to others. This will force others to spend time with us and will also lead to Godly conversations and friendships. By influencing others with our pure hearts, we promote the values of love and compassion that can completely transform a community.

4. “Truly God is good to Israel, To such as are pure in heart.” (Psalm 73:1)

Being pure in heart guarantees us inner peace. Unlike the peace the world offers us, the peace from God is ever-lasting. As long as our hearts are pure and there are no seeds of deceit or greed in them, God will grant us the gifts of inner peace and joy. A heart centered in God’s word will find serenity even amid chaos. Anxiety or stress will not affect us because we believe in His purpose for our life which brings him glory. To reach this state of inner peace, it is essential to surrender to God and let go of our expectations. Being Christians is about being in peace knowing that nothing happens to us without His knowledge. And that everything happens for our good.

5. ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”(Matthew 5:27–28)

When talking about purity from a biblical aspect, sexuality is what most people associate with. Surely purity means guarding oneself from sexual sins. But ultimately, it comes down to guarding one’s heart, because every kind of sin stems from the heart as Matthew 15 says. Though people might not commit sins physically always, the Scripture says that whoever does it through his thoughts and sights has already committed it in his heart. Moreover, be it in the heart or through physical means, God can see them all and He is the one to whom we are answerable for all our deeds on the planet.

Now you might wonder how to maintain this purity in heart. The first step is to nurture our relationship with God through prayers and meditating on His word. His word should be our comfort in even the slightest mis happenings. A person who strives to be pure should please God in all aspects of his life. He should also lead a life of honesty and integrity even if people are not around to watch. Because the benefits of clean hands and pure hearts will surely take us a long way.

It is crucial to demonstrate God’s goodness through our deeds so that those around us realize that we are rooted in God’s words. Dressing modestly and honoring our bodies also is necessary in a world where we are compelled to do otherwise. Guarding ourselves from adulterated thoughts and actions will bring us closer to God. In short, a pure heart does not have a place for envy, guilt, regret, greed, gossip, or adultery but reflects Jesus’ image in every way possible. It always overflows with love, joy, peace, and gratitude that cannot be taken away by the world.
