Professional Smash Player Brett “8BitMan” Esposito put on a great showing at Combo Breaker 2017 in Chicago, IL. He finished the tournament with a 5th place finish in 1v1’s and 3rd place in 2v2’s.

8BitMan started off his 1v1 tournament run with a flawless showing in his pool, finding 4 back to back wins against “RIN”, “S.N.E.S.s”, “Luvietheking”, and “Cheezeballer”. These wins would send him on to the Winner’s Bracket of the Top 24.

8BitMan went onward to the Winner’s Bracket of the Top 24, confidently winning the Winner’s Bracket Quarter-Final against “Ned” 2–0. He would move on to the Winner’s Semi-Final to face off against Panda Global’s “ESAM” losing the hard fought set 2–3. This loss would not only be his first loss up and until hitting the Top 8, but it would also send 8BitMan to the Loser’s Bracket, where he would face off against E2C’s “tyroy” losing another close set 2–3. This loss would eliminate him from the tournament at 5th Place.

8BitMan’s weekend would not be over just yet, he would still be competing in the 2v2 event, with tyroy as his partner. The duo would DQ from their first match, and go on to make a great Loser’s Bracket run to end up in 3rd place.

Their Loser’s Bracket run would start off with a victory against “WallaWallaWashy” and “Dyllbob”, they followed this up with wins against “TacBac” and “TCG”, along with “JbrockPony” and “8 Inches” to send the duo onto the Loser’s Bracket Quarter Finals. In the Quarter-Final they passed through with a DQ and moved on to face “Devon3000” and “dekillsage” in the Loser’s Semi-Final, winning that set 3–1 and advancing onward to the Loser’s Finals against “JJROCKETS” and “StarbasedFruit”. Though this match was close, they would end up losing the set 1–3 and being eliminated from the tournament at 3rd place.

With two solid performances, Brett certainly had a great weekend. When asked how he felt about the tournament, he was quoted as saying:

“I loved Combo Breaker and the atmosphere. The presentation was aesthetically pleasing, while also being super personable and grassroots-oriented. I got 3rd in Smash 4 Doubles and 5th in Smash 4 Singles. I played really well in Singles, but I do believe I was playing better during Day 1. I lost both of my matches in Top 8 but I still brought them to Game 5 last hit. I just need to keep practicing. This was my first Combo Breaker, and if my wallet permits it, I will be back every year from here on out.”
