Hi! Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. I think maybe there are some parts that weren’t quite understood — or maybe you just skipped the crucial last two paragraphs. It kinda sounds like you’re only responding to the first half of the piece.

I intentionally set this in a relatively liberal/educated place (suburban Chicago) to emphasize that Trump has supporters of all shapes and sizes. I don’t even make them patriots; they want to die for Trump, and that’s it. In the last paragraph, I thought it was exceptionally clear that we’re all of us responsible for Trump’s rise. Trump IS America. All of America’s sins, writ large and anthropomorphized. That’s the real point.

If you think that racism and xenophobia are the answers to America’s problems, I’m not sure what I can do to change your mind. But I hope you’ll reread the piece and think about the real message, and on America’s history, and reconsider your position. And I hope that it sparks some critical thought and discussion amongst you and your friends, even if you decide that I’m way off base.
