Why I Hate facebook

Recently, a close friend of mine let me know that she is going to be back in town for a few days.

From phone calls and text messages and all the other trappings of modern communication, I knew this. So I guess it shouldn’t have surprised me that I got a facebook invitation to an event aptly entitled “Veronica Is Coming Home.”

Stop Calling Everything an App

The other day I was writing a program to attempt to increase the lifespan of my laptop’s battery. Constant charge and discharge cycles produce normal wear and tear on a rechargeable battery. My program would detect whether the laptop was plugged in to AC power. If the laptop was plugged in and the battery had already been topped off, the program would stop…

Second Chances

When you returned, she was sitting on the bathroom floor. Her back rested on the wall. Her tank top heaved as she sobbed. She fights with you when you try to console her. You try to hold her hand and she pushes you away, curling her long beautiful legs into a ball and clutching them to her chest making her look even more vulnerable. You pry at her wrists telling her you are sorry…

Getting older

A few years ago I started seeing a girl. We fell for each other and I loved her in a way that was very flawed. But it was passionate and, in that, it was perfect. A kind of surreal fusion of…

Some things you shouldn’t be sorry for

The words “I’m sorry” are way overused. It’s good that we have been socialized to be respectful and to be courteous. But it has come to the point where we preemptively apologize even when it isn’t apparent what we’ve done wrong. For example, “I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you I was busy with something else.”

On Writing Reports and Doing Research

As a history guy with a crush on mathematics, I find myself likening a lot of what I do in historical research to the quest for mathematical understanding.

In math there are three stages to understanding (I’m paraphrasing here):

1. The pre-rigorous stage - this is where most of the undergraduate career lies…

Best before…

Before I expire I am going to do these things:

1. Rekindle a lost love. Regret is part of the nature of man (and woman). Don’t shy away from it and don’t act like it doesn’t exist. Perfect yourself and take up an offer to start things new. And start new things.

2. Spend a month waking up at dusk and turning sunsets into the morning’s first…

The future of blogging?

I’ve been posting my assignments to the web since the beginning of this semester. If you’re a masochist you can see them here. Now I’m going to be frank with you. I…
