Behold My Hands !

John 20
[27]Then saith He to Thomas, REACH HITHER thy finger, and BEHOLD MY HANDS; AND REACH HITHER THY HAND, and thrust it into my side: and BE NOT FAITHLESS, BUT BELIEVING.

In a lowly manger lay a tiny little bundle of joy
Joseph and Mary beamed at His face so cloy
Amidst neighs and gently sleeping on strewn straws
Was Him who’d later cause Mary anguished throes
His folded hands looked so frail, tiny and puny
Yet they’d wrought creation in ways so mighty
"Of old hast Thou laid the foundation of the earth"
"And the heavens are the work of Thy hands"

To His parents these hands were very helpful
Working at carpentry He became exceedingly skilful
Sinless hands were His, utterly a discomfiture
"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature"
Scriptural parchments did these animated hands turn
And thus He grew "in favour with God and man"
For thirty years His hands were bent to duty implicitly
Thus only three years were sufficient for His solemn ministry!

Early in the morning His hands were folded in prayer
No wonder men were amazed at His wondrous power
Hands never weary in well doing and healing
Dispensing blessings "His going forth is prepared as the morning"
Hands that felt "I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day"
"Till He have set judgement in the earth "He did not sway
He "whose fan was in His hand, and He thoroughly purge His floor "
Was the selfsame whose earnest hands knocked on sinful hearts' door!
Knock was oftimes spurned and slighted "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become sons of God"

Eventually these hands were tauntingly tied with reed
When for our iniquities His sinless heart had to bleed
The hands suffered flailing, were trembling and desponding
Impelled to carry the torturous cross He kept on falling
At Calvary those hands were pierced with long a nail
Even as they hang on the cross He did not bewail
Alas! Those hands still reach, seek and search both ways
For the penitent and scoffer whose price He fully pays
He’s the only one whose handiwork fulfilled sacred law’s demand
Thus to you He says "Behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand"

“And you shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck you out of My hand.”
