Welcome to Furthering Education

As a 22 year old, I am currently working on my Masters in Education and English Teaching Credential. I have volunteered in classrooms and worked summer camps for several years that I find it inevitable. Inevitable, in the sense of, I was born to be in the classroom. My version of helping others.

I have not been in a formal classroom setting, but I can see how I am as a teacher. To conquering public speaking roles and front of the class moments, I know how I work as an educator (as of now). This is currently an innocent way of looking at the life of the teacher, but a necessary building block.

How I Am as a Teacher:

1. Listening skills. They tie into my want to learn about my students. What are their stories? What are their voices? Through my listening skills (which are forever changing), the classroom will become a safe place for expression, learning, and teaching. It will be a place to learn to be respectful and be respected; knowing one’s worth; and increasing the desire to learn more about the world.

2. Team Effort. Education is often portrayed as a solo endeavor, where if the student wants to learn or just wants to sit around and pass the time. Not here. I will have the most formal education in the classroom, but that certainly does not mean I am all knowing. Students are the best teachers and vice versa. Let me take advantage of that generation gap and learn more about the students. In turn, I can learn more influential and effective ways to teach them about the greater world. This also gives my students a higher level of responsibility in their education. Not many lasting lessons will be handed to them. This is my opportunity to give them the foundation of succeeding in lessons that cannot be taught in the classroom.

3. Creating dialogue. This ties in listening and team effort. Varied opinions fill up the classroom. Varied opinions bring varied “everything.” So how can creating dialogue help with the countless differences we all face? I want my students to gain this idea of creating a dialogue to effectively voice their opinions and actively listen to their peers and other people. Too often, our differences breed insecurities and unrest. Combatting that early on in formal education can influence growing citizens

I believe my approach as a teacher has more impact outside of the classroom. Yes, formal education is quite important to become a well rounded citizen and build a strong professional base; but I find my focused impact to be much more important to my students. Again, we will see how much more growth comes to modify or completely change my identity as a teacher.

Personality:

I label myself as an extraverted introvert. I still move towards the quiet, reserved side when it comes to new situations and events. However, I am quick to bounce into new things with a better balance of taking the time to assess.

I find myself being very empathetic and wanting to help others quite often.

With these as my pillars for my personality, I find that my students maybe taken aback by my personality and my eagerness to help. We will see how they can help me and how I can help them.

Learning and Teaching Styles:

From the questionnaires and inventories I have taken, I have learned that I am a highly active, intuitive, and sequential learner. My teaching style is geared towards a facilitator.

For my future students, I will definitely change the way learn, because I want to see how my students learn. I want to see the lesson through their eyes.

As for my teaching style, the facilitator side can only be improved with every class. I understand my style of teaching is out of the box, especially with the age group I want to teach; but I do know that it can highly beneficial for my students to learn more from one another.
