If your are an iPhone user, your might take it in very different environnements : Work, Home, …

Today, your presets in your iPhone may not suit to any of these environnements. For instance, sometimes your iPhone ringing is to loud for people around you if you are at the office.

How to solve this issue ? First, we will see how Apple manage the volume of its devices. Then, we will find a solution to help you manage your iPhone volume.

Despite Android, Apple made the choice to have one overall control to manage the iPhone volume. To get the following steps, navigate in your iPhone to Settings > Sounds.

There is one general setting to set up the iPhone volume, that controls the volume for all the rings and alerts on the iPhone. It means that it is the same volume for the iPhone ring than iPhone alerts, e.g. your iPhone alarm clock.

Let the setting “Change with Buttons” off ensure you that you can manage volume in applications without changing the global volume setting, e.g. change a YouTube video volume without modify the global volume setting.

We will take a case of study : when you are at home, you want your iPhone to have a loud volume to hear from other rooms. When you are at work, you prefer your iPhone a low volume to do not disturb people around you.

If you read this post so far, you may know now that this is impossible without changing manually the volume on your phone : You want your volume to be loud when you are at home and low when you are at work. It means that you would have to decrease manually the volume of the iPhone each morning when you commute to work, and increase manually the volume when you commute back home in the evening.

How can you get rid of this burden and automate this cycle ? We are in the 21st century after all, everything not-so-smart should be automated.

Go into the Shortcuts application of the iPhone. Among the featured panels, choose the Automation panel and tap + to add a shorcut. You can now choose “Create Personal Automation”, and take the triggering event “Time of Day”. Choose the time that suits you best and tap “Next”. Now, Tap “Add Action” and choose the “Scripting” icon. Scroll down, and select “Set Volume” item. In the Actions list you can know set the volume level triggered by your shortcut.

That’s It ! We’ve seen how to enable shortcuts in the iPhone to set finely its volume, depending on the time of the day. Don’t be afraid to automate things you are used to manipulate with the iPhone. For instance, if you are a podcast amator, you can automate the iPhone to play a podcast each morning.

We never automate enough our daily routine. Despite, it is the way of improving things if you are in the I.T. domain. Start with doing something properly with your device, then automate it to repeat your actions on demand.

Below is a example screenshot of automated volume settings on the iPhone. It meets the case study we have spoken earlier. Be sure to have automated actions that suits best your habits and what you need. See ya ;-)
