We all love how easy it is to create and showcase beautiful designs in Figma but sometimes when you have to deal with outside contractors or more traditional designers you may need to convert your Figma designs to a design program they can use… which is usually Photoshop.

Converting a .fig Figma file to a .psd Photoshop file can be accomplished easily. Here’s a quick rundown: first go to Photopea.com, open your .fig file in Photopea, wait for Photopea to convert the file to a editable version, then click ‘File/Save as PSD” and you’re done!

Simple right? Well yes and no. Photopea does an absolutely amazing job of converting Figma files to Photoshop but it also has a few quirks you need to be aware of.

Quirk 1: Font’s appear incorrectly when opening the converted .psd file.

Don’t worry this is an easy fix; since Photopea doesn’t embed fonts, once you export the .psd file in Photopea, then you just need to open the .psd file in Photoshop afterwards and double click each font item individually and Photoshop will recognise the font it’s meant to be and convert it instantly.

Quirk 2: Vector shapes can be converted to lots of layers or resized

One thing Photopea also seems to do is seperate out all parts of a vector shape or SVG file into seperate layers. So it’s possible to have many layers in Photoshop for what’s meant to be just a single vector logo. A quick fix for this is just; selecting all layers and converting to a smart object. Also sometimes vector shapes appear large, and to fix these you need to select them individually and rescale them.

Quirk 3: Shadows appear really dark

Sometimes when converting your Figma file to Photoshop the layers that include objects with shadows have the shadows opacity reset to 100%. So be sure to select all layers with shadow effects applied and reduce the shadows opacity to the required amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I export a Figma .fig design file?
Open the Figma program and then open the design file you wish to export. Then click ‘File/Save as .fig…’. then select a location where you want to save the .fig file and you’re done.

Aren’t there easier ways to convert Figma files to Photoshop?
There are some programs that convert .fig to .psd but many require purchasing. There are also some websites offering file conversions that can contain viruses so be extremely careful.

Why do people still use Photoshop instead of Figma?
A great question! I’m glad you asked and the answer is generally that many designers are so used to Photoshop that changing things up and learning a new program is just too difficult or time consuming (especially when they have kids or inflexible office environments)… so sometimes we just need to be accomodating for these people.
