Parents need to know that Free Guy is an action comedy in a violent open world video game similar to Grand Theft Auto V. After programmers Milly (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) add a modification to the game Free City, Guy (Ryan Reynolds) — an in-game bank clerk who is a non-playable character (NPC) — realizes that his world is not as real as it seems. But Guy’s newfound enlightenment might be short-lived as the Free City developers decided to take the game offline. With the help of Milly’s character, Guy makes it his mission to save the game and all of his friends in it. Expect a lot of brutal video game style violence and some rough humor.

With only one week left until the premiere of Free Guy, the critical reactions to the upcoming sci-fi action comedy have receded. Free Guy will hit theaters on August 13th from 20th Century Studios, with a 45-day window of exclusivity in theaters before it becomes available to audiences to stream on Disney +.

In Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds plays as Guy, an NPC in an open world video game, who discovers that he is a character in a video game. In addition to Reynolds, Free Guy also plays Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Date Night) and written by Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and Matt Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles). The film also features cameos from some of the most influential figures in the video game world, including Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, Seán William “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Daniel “DanTDM” Middleton.
Now that the film is out in a few weeks time, it’s time to find out what the critics thought. Did Free Guys self-esteem convince people or is this film about an NPC largely unmistakable? Check out some of the early responses below — we’ll keep updating as we add more.

While most early critical responses generally tend to be on the more positive side of the equation, it may still come as a surprise to some to see how much Free Guy (also starring Jodie Comer) revered at this point will.

Collider’s Steven Weintraub says it is “perhaps the best video game film ever made”. While the medium has had some disappointing adaptations already, it’s certainly interesting to hear that its best work could be an original film that just dumps riffs on video games rather than slavishly following the source material.

Critic Scott Menzel continues the praise, saying it was “the greatest fun I’ve seen a movie all year round. Incredibly entertaining and hilarious from start to finish,” while adding that “It deserves to be on the big one Canvas to be seen. “

Writer Kristy Puchko commends director Shawn Levy (previously best known for his acclaimed work on Stranger Things) for “hilarious visual comedy.”

ComicBook.com’s Jamie Jirak points out that “it’s certainly the most appreciated by gamers,” although he pays special attention to both Reynolds and Comer for their lead shows.

However, the Nerds of Color might be the most compelling argument to see it. Free Guy is described as “the biggest surprise of the summer. Funny, charming and downright personable … It’s Tron meets Truman Show.”

The hits keep coming. Actress Wendy Lee Szany says she “can’t wait to see it again” while Rotten Tomatoes’ Joel Meares feels fresh about Free Guy: “One of the freshest, truly funniest, and surprisingly moving, big-budget adventure films in years” he said on Twitter.
Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rey Howery, Utkarsh Ambudakar, Joe Keery and Taika Waititi hits theaters on August 13th.

You can find more information about the film in the blowout function of our sister publication Total Film for release in August. All of this is part of our Back to the Cinema season, which also includes a comprehensive look at No Time to Die, Daniel Craig’s swan song as 007.
I’m an entertainment writer here at GamesRadar +, focusing on news, features, and interviews with some of the biggest names in film and television. On site I will marvel at Marvel and provide analyzes and room temperature recordings of the latest films, Star Wars and of course anime. Outside of GR, I love getting lost in a good 100 hour JRPG, Warzone, and kicking back on the (virtual) field with Football Manager. My work has also been featured in OPM, FourFourTwo, and Game Revolution.

Every time a new video feature film comes out there is the underlying fear of how bad it can get. However, judging from the first impressions of several media outlets and critics, it seems like Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy has found the digital gold in the game.

Rather than adapting a well-known video game franchise, Matt Lieberman’s original script (The Addams Family) focuses on Guy, an NPC character whose in-game life is suddenly shaken when he learns the nature of his existence. Free Guy adopts GTA’s open-world gaming standards which, when combined with Reynolds’ masterful advertising, modern Fortnite references, and Deadpool’s long-awaited MCU crossover, really raised expectations for the film. At Collider, for example, Steven Weintraub even theorized the idea that Free Guy could be “the best video game film ever” because it makes audiences feel like they are actually in Free City, and praised the film overall for its fun and some unexpected surprises. That sentiment was echoed by fandango’s Nikki Novak, who praised Reynolds for his Ted Lasso-type role and called for his co-star Jodie Comer to receive movie star status on future Marvel projects.

Rotten Tomatoes editor-in-chief Joel Meares defined Free Guy as “one of the freshest, genuinely funniest, and surprisingly moving, big-budget adventure films in years,” which bodes really well for achieving a certified fresh rating officially released on August 13th. Meanwhile, Gamespot’s Chris E. Hayner praised the film for how over the top it can be and how it crammed so many gaming Easter eggs and jokes that are sure to resonate with a full theater audience.

While Free Guy is overwhelmingly popular for its video game testimonials, most of the reviewers pointed out that it won’t stop non-gamers from enjoying this incredibly fun and carefree feel-good movie. In addition to Reynolds, who is accompanied by Taika Waititi and the rest of the cast, Free Guy also features many high profile cameos from Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman, John Krasinski, Tina Fey, Ninja and Pokimane, as well as a posthumous appearance from Late Peril! Host Alex Trebek.

It has to be reiterated what Deadpool said in his trailer reaction video, as Free Guy will not be available on Disney Plus, it will only be shown as part of his theatrical release for now. As it stands, Free Guy definitely has more in common with Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph than it does with Monster Hunter. So for those who can safely do it, as so many critics say, it is worth seeing in a movie theater.
