The article was scathing, insensitive and provocative, but it wasn’t racist. It was about a pop culture scientist that happens to be black.
Yes, it would have been nice if the author had considered Neil deGrasse Tyson’s race, his position as a positive role model to young black students, and the significant barriers he overcame to succeed before writing a critical word against him, but it’s not default racism to do otherwise.
Thanks for sharing your reactions and thoughts. I know I’ll move forward with more sensitivity towards these issues.
