Narendra Modi Stadium
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad is home to the first public building in India to bear Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name: the Narendra Modi Stadium. With a capacity of 132,000 people, it will be the largest cricket stadium in the world by the year 2023.
The first test match was held in November 1983, and since then, there have been several notable accomplishments on the field, including Sunil Gavaskar’s 10,000 Test runs against Pakistan in 1986–87 and Kapil Dev’s 432nd Test wicket, which he used to surpass Sir Richard Hadlee and become the player with the most wickets in history in 1994. In 1987, 1996, and 2011, the stadium has served as the site of the Cricket World Cup. It should be noted that on February 24, 2021, India and England played in the stadium’s first-ever pink-ball Test match.

Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister, has been honoured by having the stadium renamed in his honour.With 110,000 seats,
it is now the largest cricket venue in the world. Previously, Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Stadium (MCG), which can accommodate 80,000 spectators, held the title of largest cricket stadium in the world.
Narendra Modi Stadium History
It was renamed to honour Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, and was formerly known as Gujarat Stadium. A new stadium was to be constructed on 100 acres of land granted by the Gujarati government in 1982 along the Sabarmati River. The building was finished in nine months, and it hosted its inaugural one-day international between Australia and India in 1984–1985, when Australia triumphed.
In 2006, the stadium was transformed into the focal point of the ICC Champions Trophy and five of the tournament’s 15 games were held there. The stadium underwent renovations to create three new pitches and a new outfield in order to host the event. As part of the rehabilitation project, the stadium received floodlights and covered stands.
When India has hosted the Cricket World Cup, Sardar Patel Stadium has consistently been one of the top locations, especially for the opening game between England and New Zealand in the 1996 World Cup. In 1987 and 1996, just one game was played there, but the 2011 World Cup saw three games there, including the quarterfinal between Australia and India. Sardar Patel Stadium has hosted 12 Tests, 23 ODIs, and 1 T20 game as of August 19, 2017.

Gujarat Cricket Association made the bold decision to rebuild the stadium and make it the largest cricket stadium in the world under the visionary guidance of GCA President and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The stadium was shut down and destroyed for renovation in October 2015. The anticipated overall cost of the renovation was 700 crores. The final price, however, was estimated to be Rs. 800 crore. The renovation was supposed to be finished in 2019, however it was actually finished in February 2020.
On February 24, 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind officially opened the stadium in the presence of numerous dignitaries, including the home minister Amit Shah and the minister of sports Kiren Rijiju.
Narendra Modi Stadium Construction Details
The Australian sports architecture firm POPULOUS conceived and created the Narendra Modi Stadium, which was built in partnership with India’s leading builder Larsen & Toubro.
The lower and upper bowls of the stadium each have two rows of seats. G and H, which are Y-shaped columns that are situated on the grid’s edge, make up the upper bowl. GY and HY are the names of these columns. These columns link the main radial beams.
The stadium’s overall size is comparable to 32 football fields of Olympic dimensions.
One of the more challenging aspects of the project was the roof structure of Motera Stadium, for which Walter P Moore served as the structural engineer. According to Viral Patel, Director of Design at Walter P Moore, Motera Stadium is situated in a level three seismic zone, which necessitates the development of an affordable roof system and the need for a lightweight roof. They determined that adding a thin, cable-supported tensile membrane roof would be the best course of action. In order to make it earthquake-resistant, they also decided that the reinforced concrete bowl and the roof structure needed to be independent of one another.
Narendra Modi Stadium Design and Facilities
- There are four entrances to the stadium, which contains 63 acres of land, with a metro line at one of them.
- The stadium has a field that is 180 yards by 150 yards in size.
- There are 76 corporate boxes with a capacity of 25 people each, a 55-room clubhouse, an Olympic-sized pool, and four team dressing rooms.
- The stadium’s LED roof lights, which replace the standard floodlights on the cricket ground, are a distinctive feature. The anti-bacterial, fireproof canopy with PTFE membrane was purchased from Japan, and it has LED lights mounted on it. The canopy covers 30 metres of the 55 metres of the seating area’s width.
- The stadium has a translucent circular PTFE fibreglass tensile membrane roof made by the company Walter P Moore to shield spectators from the sun and rain. In order to make it earthquake-resistant, it was specifically made to be lightweight and separate from the sitting bowl. The design does away with the need for columns and provides spectators with a clear view of the entire pitch from anywhere inside the stadium.
- The stadium may also include a number of additional facilities outside the playing field, including a swimming pool, an indoor cricket academy, badminton and tennis courts, a squash field, a table tennis field, a 3D projector theatre, and a clubhouse with three practise areas and 50 rooms.
- The players have access to four team dressing rooms and related amenities.
- 10,000 two-wheelers and 3,000 vehicles can both park here. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, a sizable ramp has also been constructed to make moving 60,000 people at once easier. For smaller events, the stadium’s lower levels are filled with spectators, maintaining a busy feeling even when it’s not quite full. To lessen traffic, a skywalk connects the stadium to the metro station.
- In addition to local and international cricket matches, the Narendra Modi Stadium will be used for community events. Students from all across India and the world can attend the stadium’s indoor cricket academy, which is located beneath the podium and offers lodging for 40 athletes.

2022 — The IPL broke the previous record for the biggest cricket jersey in 2022. It was on display at the ceremony’s conclusion. The shirt was white in colour and featured the logos of all 10 IPL teams, along with the number 15, to commemorate the league’s 15th anniversary (IPL). The BCCI’s president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, and IPL commissioner Brijesh Patel received the certificate.
