Exercise 1: Expressing Memories

Part C: The memory I remember the most is one I had in junior high-school. I had a friend who always got angry whenever I talked to a girl she didn’t like. She turned jeleaous, short-tempered, and started to give me conditions whenever I either tried to have a conversation with that other girl or decided to hang out with her after school. She became possessive and that made me feel uncomfortable. I think this memory has stayed with me for long time because it was a three year nightmare. I felt devastated and sad whenever I had to stop talking to my other friend just so that she didn’t get mad or started saying bad thinks about my other friend in front of me. To conclude, I still remember this because it made me doubt about myself. It was hard not to talk to my other friend to make make old friend happy. I couldn’t split into two so I felt like it wasn’t really me living those years. Nowadays, in high school, my friends allow me to talk to others, which is a good think; actually it’s freedom. I feel free but also nervous. You see, it’s not easy to have such level of freedom after someone else has controlled who you get to talk to.

Exercise 2: Your three favourite films

Part A and B: Yours, Mine and Ours: I connect with this movie because of the idea of living and dealing with a crazy and funny family every day.

The Proposal: I connect with this film because most of the time I judge without knowing. Starting high-school I categorized people as mean and rude just by their appearance. Turns out must of them are some of the closest friends I have.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: I use to dream while I’m awake. The use of magic within this movie makes me feel like I’m not the only one who believes in other worlds besides the one we are living on.

Part C: What these three films have in common is the theme of family union. The three of them try to maintain good relations within family or friends. Harry Potter, for instance, fights all battles with the aim of honouring his parents. On the two other films, they all try to adjust and maintain good relationships between the new family members. Despite this, there’s a big difference between them; magic. Harry Potter describes a magical world, whereas the stories Yours, Mine, and Ours, and The Proposal happen within normal worlds as ours.

Exercise 3: What if…

What if you get to kill “the one”?

What if you get to breed 18 children?

What if you get to marry your secretary?

Exercise 4: Characters and Worlds

Part A: Who are the main characters?

In the movie The Proposal, the main characters are Margaret Tate (a chief editor at a major New York City book publisher) and Andrew Paxton (Margaret’s assistant whose career goal is to become an editor). On the film Yours, Mine, and Ours, the main characters are Frank Beardsley and Helen White. Finally, on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the main characters are Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.

Is there a character you identify with the most?

Regarding these three movies, the character I identify the most with is Hermione Granger. I am an organized girl who likes to get good grades. I put big efforts in everything I do and whenever needed, I fight for what I think is right. I like to make people think that I’m capable of much more than just grades, just as Hermione proved within the battles she fought.

Where does the movie take place? Is it in one world or multiple worlds?

The Proposal and Yours, Mine, and Ours films take place in one world. Both worlds take place within the hometown of the main characters. On the other side, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows happens in two worlds; one is muggle and the other one is magical. This last film takes place in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were wands and spells are crucial.

Part D: First of all I’ld bring Hermione Granger into the world of Yours, Mine and Ours. It would be fun to see how she gets to breed 18 children in a hometown (muggle world) with little to not magic available. If Hermione doesn’t have her best friend (wand and magic) by her side, then she would have to read, investigate, interview, and live funny embarrassing moments in order to succeed this assignment. Simply put, it would be a life full of surprises and obstacles that Hermione would need to face by herself.
