My team just told me off and it’s probably a good thing
Generally speaking I find it hard to switch off. I really enjoy my work, the girls on my team are great and most of the time I’m having a lot of fun.
For the past two days I’ve been on leave to spend some time in Norfolk with friends. It’s one of those lazy holidays where we aren’t doing much aside from eating, drinking and reading.
Even though I do have a pretty good novel on the go, I’ve enjoyed finding time to get through my back log on Flipboard as well as read all the new pieces about my industry that have come out this week.
And, as they’re relevant to work, I’ve been passing the links back to my team with little notes as to who and why they might find them interesting.
But this came to a prompt halt earlier today when one replied back “Frith, go on holiday!”
While I know the comment was said with a laugh, I could also read the genuine instruction within it. They know I’m useless at leaving work behind and could so I wasn’t doing any better this time.
However, the more I thought about it I realised that the point wasn’t just about me switching off.
Going out of the office for a few days is a nice opportunity for other people within the team to step up and get on with the day to day; something I’ve noticed has been happening well yesterday and today. A few times when I’ve opened my emails I’ve seen things that have been responded to with recommendations or instruction which would usually come from me. And seeing that is great.
While it’s only two days it gives others a good opportunity to really own the responsibility while holding the fort. If I’m checking in every few hours, the feeling of autonomy is hardly the same.
So basically, I’ve been told.
But like I said, it’s a good thing. It has made me think I need to separate myself from my desk a bit, and also because it makes me rate my team even more for calling me out on it.
