My definition of “peaked” refers to Silicon Valley’s relative importance in the world. Will it be more or less dominant over time? My guess is less, because other ecosystems are maturing and creating very impressive companies. But will Silicon Valley be irrelevant? Surely not! It will continue to be the most important place for tech companies for a long time to come. As for universities, I believe Stanford and Cal are hugely important to the success of Silicon Valley. Without them it would have been impossible. But there are many other cities with close proximity to high quality schools around the world, and it’s not a unique differentiator. Historically the unique part was that these schools encouraged entrepreneurship when most other schools pushed their students to take steady jobs at large corporates. But this is also changing around the world….
