We are constantly witnessing the resurgence of Y2K fashion. Y2K fashion emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is characterised by futurism and a youthful verve.

As it is fashion trends come and go. But fashion lovers know that fashion trends can sometimes be revived.

Fashion Week, held in four of fashion’s great capitals — New York, Milan, London and Paris — showcases the collections for the coming year. Now the Spring/Summer 2023 collections are on the catwalks in Paris.

And from what we’ve seen, it’s pretty clear that the Y2K aesthetic is coming back to life.

What is Y2K fashion?

As we approached the turn of the millennium, a computer glitch defined everyday life. In the 1990s, computer systems stored the year in only two digits. It was therefore feared that when the number of years changed from 1999 to 2000, the systems would collapse.

This was no secret. The media reported intensively on the problem. The solution was as simple as possible. The two-digit store had to be changed to four-digit storage. This was done successfully. Thanks to the work of computer experts and programmers.

This has been called the Y2K bug. The Y stands for years and the K for kilo, which in this case is in the thousands. The unique aesthetics in dressing that emerged at the turn of the millennium were called Y2K aesthetics or Y2K fashion.

Isabel Marant returns to Y2K fashion

Isabel Marant is a French fashion designer who founded a fashion brand under her own name. She won the Award de la Mode in 1997. In 2012, she was named Designer of the Year by Glamour.

Low-waisted shorts and strapless waist dresses are also featured in the Spring 2023 collection. Shimmering ruffled dresses in Isabel Marant’s collection is a sign that Y2K fashion is back.
