I have reached that age where I am called ma’am, and it is not all bad. There’s respect in that “ma’am.” I’m relieved to have passed that stage where it was “Do I call her ma’am or miss?” and I got “miss.” It’s horrible to be patronized like that, and to be seen as someone who likes to be lied to. No one wants to be called “miss” at fifty.
