Our founder’s former method of spending control

Controlling spending behavior was very difficult for our founder.

Every morning. At 5am, he’d arrive at National Grid’s Dorchester natural gas site. He’d open his computer, log into his bank account, open his phone, log into his spending tracker, and open his excel document entitled: spending.

He’d spend 15 minutes copying spending values from the previous day stored in his spending tracker app into specific cells in his spending excel sheet. Then’d he’d cross check with his bank account to make sure he wasn’t missing anything. His excel sheet would update according to the new values.

If he didn’t do this, if he didn’t see the data that was in that Excel sheet, he’d spend $25 per day on food, and feel totally fine about it. Even if logically, he knew that going out to each for lunch and dinner everyday was a terrible habit, he couldn’t find the motivation to change.

Like a lot of people, he recorded every transaction into a spending tracker, despite the existence and prominence of apps like Mint.com. So why did he resort to manually recording transactions and putting the data into Excel?

Because he wanted to change something about his spending behavior, and Mint.com didn’t cut it.

That was the inspiration for Froogily. A product that actually makes users change their behavior. Not an product that takes away responsibility from users, but makes responsible behavior easier, almost fun. Our product actually makes you get your hands dirty. You have to categorize every one of your transactions. But that’s actually a huge benefit, and a lot of people love doing it. It’s important to spend time on your spending, that’s a big part of changing spending behavior. We just made it super easy and fun.

So we got to building, using, loving, and promoting our awesome product.

We have a lot of other articles about the product, plus stories about why it’s useful. Check them out if you want to know more!

If you have spending impulses that you want to change, Froogily.com will help you! Check us out here and try it :)
