While I do not come from a marketing background, you have stated what has become very apparent (and what I have tried to teach others): first provide value, the rest will always follow.

In companies all over the world, we are teaching people to think only about the deal itself without teaching that value must be exchanged (principles!). Any fool can do one deal — but, in fact, the only question should be “does your client want to work with you again?”
