A Crock Pot Is A Frugal Person’s Best Friend

As a cheapskate, I have long been an advocate for clever thinking when eating. It’s all too easy to fall into the takeout trap, and before you know it, you’ve spent a week’s worth of grocery money on one single meal. I know, I used to do it — a lot.

This is where I can not sing the praises enough, of the humble and the cheap crock pot.

From making pudding, to bread, to jacket potatoes, to curries, it can do everything — at a fraction of the cost of a normal oven or eating out.

My most favourite thing to make is curry.

Not simply for the taste, but also for the fact that a curry is a catch-all for any odds and ends of food, especially vegetables and spices you may have lolling about in the fridge or cupboard.

It’s slow, it languorously cooks your food, to tender, delicious perfection. The time taken to make the dish allows the flavours to meld together and, at the risk of sounding like an up-myself idiot, brings out the layers of taste, so much better than something cobbled together quickly.

The latest thing I made was a pumpkin curry, loosely based on one I found in the cheap section of the BBC Food app. I added a few extra bits and pieces, and oh my, it was delicious. It made 8…
