NISM YPro July 2015. Volume 1, Issue 2
Welcome to our second newsletter. So what have we been up to? We’ve recently launched a “YProfiles” series on our blog, starting with a bang — Folabi Ogunkoya. Folabi is a young man who gave up trading at UBS to start a successful venture in events. You may have heard of his brand Cococure but, if not, be sure to watch out for his popular nights!
His story is one that many of us can relate to. Do we stay in a career we don’t enjoy? Or do we take the entrepreneur route? This could be extended further… When is it time for a change? Some of us may love the careers we are in, but might want to move higher on the ladder, take on more management responsibilities or just move to a different firm. Not everybody is allured by the call for entrepreneurship; some prefer the structure that comes with working in a corporate environment. There are certainly no blanket answers, but Folabi’s experience shows that bravely going for whichever route one decides to take and putting in the hard work required eventually pays off.
In making these decisions as young professionals who care about issues in Nigeria, it’s important to consider how each career move we make helps our self-development, and prepares us for being future leaders and advocates for Nigeria.
YPro also plans to launch YProLetters, giving you the opportunity to send in your thoughts about a range of issues. Whether it is your career or thoughts around Nigerian culture and development, tell us what you think! We’ve also been diligently working behind the scenes to raise funds and partner with organisations to launch our ThinkDo and ThinkAct initiatives. Finally, we’ll be launching our research framework at our inaugural event on September 3rd at Berwin Leighton Paisner; stick it in your diaries! Look forward to seeing you all there and carpe dieme.
