Thanks for linking to my piece on non-binary erasure in your essay. The intersections of race and gender, and how those are enacted in different cultures, are particularly relevant today, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. In my blog about the day, I specifically avoided talking about the criminalization (up to and including the death penatly) of homosexuality in many African countries, as I didn’t want to give US-Americans the impression that we are superior to others just because we don’t legally kill gay, bi, or trans folks (unless the killer is a white police officer). Lots of racism and xenophobia comes up when LGBT issues are raised, particularly by cis white gay men.
