Caster Semenya & Racialized Cissexism

Well-said, especially on the subject of misogynoir. When I watched the women’s swimming events at the Rio Olympics, I heard the announcers refer to white US-American Katie Ledecky as the greatest swimmer ever, female or male, but I never heard anyone suggest that she get tested for elevated testosterone or other “abnormal” sex characteristics. Nor have I seen this six-foot-tall teenager described in any terms that cast doubt on her gender.

If cissexist people are going to make a persuasive claim that they’re just trying to have a fair, even playing field for female athletes, they’re going to need to start by testing everyone across the board, not just for hormone levels but height, muscle mass, and all other physical factors that might influence performance. Of course that would be totally impractical, which is exactly the point.
