WHAT I LEARNT FROM Mrs. IBUKUN AWOSIKAS SPEECH AT THE COVENANT UNIVERSITY 2018 CONVOCATION.
I first found the hype for Mrs. Awosika’s speech on twitter, people who had attended the convocation ceremony kept on talking about how awesome the speech was, and a short while later the 30 minutes long speech was uploaded on YouTube, you could stop by and I promise you it won’t be a waste of your time. I got inspired to write this review because I have listened to it a million times and I honestly get refreshed every single time I re-listen to it. There were so many packed lessons, but in summary here’s a few:
Allow yourself to Evolve:
She gives a short story about how it took her a while to understand what she wanted to study in the university, and even after graduation she still takes out time to make new choices, this is particularly important to me because sometimes I get upset with myself as I rediscover more about what I want to do, become and be, I understand more that this is a process and it is a process I must allow to develop and nurture, the best things would fall into place and you would in turn get to know and understand yourself better.
Believe in Nigeria:
She made believing in Nigeria look ‘sexy’, she talked about how incredibly proud she was of an education from Nigeria and how she intends on building the country and one of the major means of doing this was by investing in the younger generations. I connected to this especially now with the subtle pressure of trying to get a degree abroad which is absolutely amazing but should be done within ones means and time. It was refreshing to hear this from Mrs. Awosika.
It’s a beautiful time to be young:
She gave revealing statistics on how there are more young people in Nigeria and how they can change the course of this country. A country with higher youthful population can literally accomplish anything; young people must also be ready to face the world and insists making the best of these opportunities.
A tiny hole can sink a ship
This tiny hole is character, she adds that, don’t seek for commerce without morality, don’t seek knowledge without character. This is very important as am sure everyone has one story or the other about being a victim of fraud or attempted fraud, many people are cutting corners and honestly you don’t have to be part of them, you can be better.
MARRIAGE
This is in full caps so that my fellow hopeless romantics can gather here for a selfieee. I love, love so….., she talks about marriage as one of the biggest decision one would make in his or her life therefore remove the idea of already made man and focus on finding someone with values. And in general, Build, follow your time scale, refuse envy, celebrate your friends, follow your time, whatever you have not been given go and find.
