Whether you’re a dog enthusiast or just plain curious, you’ve probably asked yourself “What breeds of dogs are the strongest?” Well, I’ve compiled a short list of some of the strongest dog breeds. All were bred for different reasons but are known for their sheer strength and power. Let’s get started!

5. Pitbull

Coming in as the fifth strongest dog is the Pitbull. Despite having been bred for the heinous purpose of blood sports in the 1700s, these pups are some of the most loving and loyal canine pals to this day! Don’t let their cute little faces fool you — they’re strong!

4. German Shepherd

At number for, our next strongest dog is the German Shepherd. Originally bred to be the optimal herding dog, they now have gained the reputation of the optimal K9 unit. The German Shepherd’s utility goes far beyond chasing criminals — they are also great family dogs (I grew up around several of the sweetest GSDs ever!), making them a truly remarkable and multifaceted breed.

3. Rotweiller

Coming in as the third strongest dog is the Rottweiler. The Rottweiler’s origin can be traced back as far as the Roman Empire, where they were used to protect the army’s herds from bandits and wild animals. Since then, they’ve taken on the roles of guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and many other tasks. If you’ve ever seen a Rottweiler, it may be hard to believe they’re so capable of many different tasks. Despite being loving goofballs, they’re a strong and versatile dog breed, ready for any task!

2. Saint Bernard

The second strongest dog breed is the Saint Bernard. Standing at almost 3 feet tall and up to 180 pounds, these pups were bred to help trudge through the huge snow drifts of the Alps and locate lost travelers (it’s no wonder they look like big teddy bears, they needed all that fur to stay warm!) and despite their extreme power, the AKC rates them a perfect 5 out of 5 for their affectionate nature with family and excellent compatibility with young children.

1. Bull Mastiff

And the number one strongest dog (drum roll please…) is the Bullmastiff! These intimidating dogs were bred to keep poachers from hunting gamekeeper’s livestock, and by looking at them you can imagine they did a good job! The AKC describes them as “Fearless at work, docile at home” making them a formidable yet gentle guardian.

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, these five remarkable dog breeds showcase both strength and loyalty, embodying the perfect blend of power and companionship for families and various roles, making them exceptional choices for any dog lover seeking a devoted and capable furry friend.
