Seedstars World Nairobi

All roads led to iHub last Friday 2nd October for the Seedstars World Nairobi startup competition.

Seedstars World promotes, connects and invests up to $1.5mn in emerging market startups through its exclusive startup competition in over 50 countries.

10 startups pitched in front of a local and international jury. The jury included Marcello Schermer Regional Manager Africa at Seedstars World, Tolga Ors Program Manager/ Director at Inmarsat, Aaron Fu Managing Partner Africa at NEST, Veronica Ogeto-Tchoketch Head of Innovation at Safaricom, Josiah Mugambi Executive Director at iHub, and Ben Wandawanda Head of Business CFC Stanbic Bank.

The overall winner was Illuminum Greenhouses, who will be representing Kenya at the global competition to be held in Switzerland in March 2016, and could win $500,000 in equity investment and a host of other prizes.

Illuminum Greenhouses constructs affordable modern greenhouses and installs automated drip irrigation kits for smallholder farmers by using locally available materials and solar powered sensors.

First runners up was Lynk Kenya, a company that’s using tech to make it easier for clients to find reputable informal workers and linking these workers to jobs posted on their platform.

Second runners up was totohealth that’s utilizing SMS and voice technology to help reduce maternal and child mortality, and detect developmental abnormalities in early stages.

The audience also got to vote for their favourite, LipaCard that has developed a cashless wallet for students who under 18 powered by NFC technology. LipaCard is an Alumnus of The Founders’ Hive’s MVP Demo Day.

In kind prizes included:

  • 3 Months technical assistance from The Founders’ Hive to accelerate their growth.
  • A design package worth $500 each from LMD.
  • $1,000 worth of cloud credits and analytics access to the public vote winner from IBM.
  • iBizAfrica will incubate the winner and provide mentorship and support.
