How I made peace with having so many interests

You know how they talk about being “a jack of all trades but a master of none”? It’s BS because when a multitalented person is told this it’s like they have to feel guilty for being multitalented.

Another thing is that often times exploring one talent leads to exploring other talents. If I may offer an example, my childhood love of drawing comics led to an interest in 2d animation that led to an interest in 3D animation and eventually web based animation (Flash). And that eventually led to web design which led to front end development which led to full stack development and now it’s back to mobile development.

Society often tries to pigeonhole people into learning one thing and abandoning the rest because they simply must “focus” on this and make a career of it. To be fair part of it holds true, as focus and commitment to a single path ensure gaining expertise quickly. But to say that for example I will stop writing, drawing and playing bass to pursue programming all day…that just ends up cutting both the depth from life and also potential sources of outside inspiration.
