Women aren’t paid equally? The notion that women are paid less than men due to discrimination is junk science. Even the press releases every year form that Wisconsin Women’s group that claims that ‘women earn 78 cents (or whatever) for every dollar a man makes due to discrimination’ says at the end ‘This study did not take into account other factors like hours worked, education, or experience’. The fact is that the Census Data which shows women ON AVERAGE earn less than men also shows that women ON AVERAGE work fewer hours than men (full-time is defined as 32 hours per week OR MORE). Women IN THE WORKFORE have on average less education and less experience than men. And, of course, not all degrees are created equally, so the simplistic studies that claim that ‘Women with Bachelor’s degrees are subject to discrimination because they make less than men’ don’ take into account what subject the degrees are in, the quality of the colleges, or the grades. The studies also do not take into account men being more often in jobs with physical discomfort or danger, and men more often choosing to work in big cities and at inconvenient times, or women choosing jobs with greater non-pay compensation like vacations, flex-time, and pensions.
