Stop Racism
Its our responsibility
My wife and I constantly discuss the impact of racism since we are Cuban Americans. All of us Cubans migrated to the United States after Castro for one reason or another. Some of us for political reasons and other for economical reasons but all looking for the freedom to say and do what we wanted without being watched or controlled by others. Other races were not so lucky.
Needless to say I have experienced racism against Mexicans in Texas and Arizona and against African Americans almost everywhere. “Watch out for the wetbacks I was told” the speaker not realizing I was also Hispanic or if they did preempting that statement with “Cubans like you are OK”.
Be careful with the “blacks” .. I have heard even from my people. So when I saw this video on YouTube
I silently cried when I realized that I had actually stayed silent and allowed the hate of other human beings to be demonstrated in public.. and if I did so I allowed it to continue. I applaud those on this video that were much better human beings than me .. but I will change as of today.
As written in The Atlantic a growing literature shows discrimination raises the risk of many emotional and physical problems. Discrimination has been shown to increase the risk of stress, depression, the common cold, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and mortality. Recently, two journals — The American Journal of Public Health and The Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race — dedicated entire issues to the subject. These collections push us to consider how discrimination becomes what social epidemiologist Nancy Krieger, one of the field’s leaders, terms “embodied inequality.”

Next time I experience racism I will not allow it to be expressed .. I will disagree and firmly say NO! NOT HERE!
