What a fascinating article. I have thought about the many issues related to how language moderates the emotions we express and how we express them over and over throughout the years, and you did a great job illuminating a few of them. In regards to picking a therapist, bilinguals do have a bit of a conundrum regarding which language they would like to communicate in. I personally would prefer a Spanish speaking therapist because I feel that speaking in Spanish, my native tongue, would allow me to express myself more freely and more precisely than speaking in English could. More specifically, I think I would prefer a native Spanish speaking therapist, because I assume that he would understand the cultural forces that have shaped my personality more readily and those would not require any explanation on my part. I think having two therapists may perhaps be too frivolous but I can at least understand how one who speaks your native tongue and understands your culture would fulfill a different function from a therapist who does not, and vice versa.
