I want the ability to extend built-in classes.

Not modify the existing methods of those classes, but to add methods of my own. So that…

‘some text’.myFunction()

…would work.

I would leap instantly upon the Python 3 train were it to gain the ability to extend built-in classes.

Until / unless that comes about, Python 2 series offers everything else I really need.
